How it all

started

Church services in the rain on Heartbreak Ridge in Korea inspired the original drawing by Jim Brummett. It shows a weary G-I remembering the parting words of the Chaplain as the men were called from worship to repulse an enemy attack. Brummett says the sketch was made several days later but the message was still vivid in the men's minds.

It was raining and the guys had had a pretty rough night, but all the guys that possibly could go, went. There were approximately 40 men at the service. The Chaplain said that anyone who didn't want to sit in the rain could feel free to leave. No one left.

"It was a short sermon,” describes Brummett. “As we were standing in closing prayer, tears rolled down the Chaplain's face as he asked us to bow our heads. When he had finished, we all stood there for a moment and slowly turned to our duties. As we turned, he said, ‘To Conquer, Have Faith in God!’”
